Recently, friends came over for dinner and then left the next day for their winter home. Two days later, the husband called to tell us that his wife had lain down for a nap, and never woke up again.

This had a profound effect on me. It disturbed my sense of mortality. It made me look at my family with new eyes, and wonder whether I appreciated everything that was good in my life. Had I ever been mean to anyone that I would regret.
